Akshay Kumar,s upcoming survival thriller movie, Mission Raniganj: The Great Bharat Rescue, is a Hindi-language film directed by Tinu Suresh Desai and produced by Pooja Entertainment. It is based on the 1989 collapse of the Raniganj Coalfields in West Bengal and is inspired by the heroic actions of Jaswant Singh Gill, an engineer who led a challenging rescue mission to save trapped miners from a flooded coal mine. The film stars Akshay Kumar and Parineeti Chopra in the lead roles.

The Story Behind the Collapse of the Raniganj Coalfields.
The Raniganj Coalfields collapse of 1989 in West Bengal was a tragic incident that claimed the lives of six miners and trapped 65 others in a flooded coal mine. The miners triggered a series of blasts to break coal walls, which caused the mine structure to shake and a wall in an underground area adjacent to the miners’ work site to crack. This crack resulted in water flooding in and caused the miners to get trapped.
Jaswant Singh Gill, an engineer, led a challenging rescue mission to save the trapped miners. Gill came up with the idea of creating a tall, six-foot iron capsule that measured 21 inches in diameter. He cleverly placed it into the ground by digging a brand new borehole. To lower and lift the capsule, Gill utilized a powerful 12-tonne crane. With great care, he successfully raised each of the 65 miners to safety, one by one. It took Gill 6 hours to complete this incredible rescue mission, and he was cheered on by more than 2,000 people who gathered to witness the heroic event.
Words fail to capture the overwhelming emotions Gill experienced after rescuing the last miner. It was a truly indescribable feeling! To commemorate his exceptional bravery, Coal India celebrates Rescue Day every year on November 16, honoring Gill and his courageous efforts.
