Urvil Patel, the dynamic wicketkeeper-batter from Gujarat, set the cricketing world on fire during a Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) match against Mizoram. The Gujarat opener pulverized 12 sixes and seven fours, recording a staggering 28-ball century—the second-fastest in T20 history.
Following his omission from the IPL 2025 mega auction, where he failed to attract any bids, Urvil Patel has now rewritten T20 records with a blazing century. The 28-ball blitz against Tripura in the 2024 SMAT match saw Patel amass an unbeaten 113 runs off 35 deliveries, effortlessly chasing down a 156-run target.
Patel narrowly missed breaking the world record for the fastest T20 century, which is held by Estonia’s Sahil Chauhan, who achieved the milestone in just 27 balls against Cyprus earlier this year. For India, the previous record was held by Rishabh Pant, who struck a century in 32 balls for Delhi against Himachal Pradesh in the 2018 SMAT.

ToggleGujarat’s Commanding Win
Earlier in the day, Tripura posted a modest 155/8 against Gujarat at the Emerald Heights International School Ground in Indore. The highlight of Tripura’s innings was Sridam Paul’s 57 runs off 49 balls, which included four boundaries and as many sixes. Gujarat’s bowlers delivered a disciplined performance, with Arzan Nagwaswalla being the standout, claiming three wickets for 35 runs. Chintan Gaja also impressed with two wickets, while skipper Axar Patel and Visha B Jayswal claimed one wicket apiece.
In reply, Urvil Patel unleashed his explosive batting prowess, while his partner Aarya Desai supported him at the other end. Patel reached his half-century in just 15 balls, showcasing his ruthless aggression with a strike rate of 322.86. His unbeaten 113 off 35 balls was adorned with seven fours and 12 sixes, as Gujarat cruised to a dominant eight-wicket victory, needing only 58 balls to complete the chase.
Urvil Patel Unsold in Auction
Urvil’s remarkable feat comes after a period of disappointment at the IPL auction. He was part of the Gujarat Titans squad for two seasons but never made his IPL debut. Despite a base price of Rs 30 lakh in the 2025 auction, no franchise expressed interest in his services, leaving the promising cricketer unsold.
This was Urvil’s maiden T20 century, surpassing his previous best of 96 runs. From 43 T20 matches, he has accumulated 875 runs at an average of 20.83, including four half-centuries. His strike rate stands at an impressive 154.32, with nearly half of his career sixes coming in this blistering knock against Mizoram.
Urvil Patel Claims Fastest T20 Century by an Indian
In another milestone, Urvil Patel has set the record for the fastest T20 century by an Indian, reaching the landmark in just 28 balls in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. His exceptional innings against Tripura surpassed Rishabh Pant’s previous Indian record of a 32-ball century, achieved for Delhi in the 2018 edition of SMAT.
Patel’s explosive 113 not only earned him the distinction of being the second-fastest century in T20 cricket history but also firmly etched his name in the record books. The all-time fastest T20 century is still held by Sahil Chauhan of Estonia, who reached his hundred in 27 balls against Cyprus earlier this year.
Fastest T20 Centuries
- Sahil Chauhan (Estonia) – 27 balls – Estonia vs Cyprus (2024)
- Urvil Patel (India) – 28 balls – Gujarat vs Tripura (2024)
- Chris Gayle (West Indies) – 30 balls – RCB vs Pune Warriors India (2013)
A Promising Career Of Urvil Patel
Urvil Patel, hailing from Mehsana, Baroda, began his professional cricket journey in 2018, debuting in T20 cricket for Baroda against Mumbai in Rajkot. In the same year, he made his List A debut, but his first-class debut only came six years later, during the 2023 Ranji Trophy season.
In 2023, Gujarat Titans picked Patel for INR 20 lakh, but he was unable to make his mark in the IPL, remaining unused throughout the season. Released by the franchise, he entered the IPL 2025 auction with a base price of Rs 30 lakh, only to go unsold.
Across 44 T20 matches, Patel has accumulated 988 runs at an average of 23.52, with a remarkable strike rate of 164.11, including one century and four half-centuries. His scintillating form in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy has brought him back into the spotlight, proving that his potential extends far beyond the IPL stage.
